Reach Across the Aisle

 

The term reaching across the aisle is used in reference to reaching out to the opposition to support or to be supported.The aisle is the actual aisle or metaphorical divide between two political parties. In some chambers, the legislators sit together according to political party and there is an actual aisle separating the parties.If a person reaches “across the aisle” then that person is reaching out to the opposition.

 

Example:

 

The Republican Senator from Virginia reached across the aisle to the Democratic Senator from Maryland as they held similar beliefs regarding the upcoming legislation and felt that the importance of the issue warranted bipartisan support.
