The term state is used in several different ways in politics. It can mean:

 

• a country

 

Example: The United States of America is a country

 

• a subsection of a country

 

Example: Virginia is a state within the United States of America

 

• a government

 

• a group of people who occupy a particular territory and are organized under a government.
